Why is corn in so many Mexican proverbs?

Corn was and remains the staple of Mexican daily life and a deeply rooted cultural symbol going back to pre-Hispanic civilizations. Refranes that use corn imagery reach for the most universal vocabulary in the room.

Are these refranes used outside Mexico?

Some travel. Others (échame el pollo, el que tiene más saliva traga más pinole) stay distinctly Mexican because they reference foods or processes specific to Mexican kitchens.

What's the most Mexican food refrán?

Échame el pollo y te muelo el maíz is the strongest candidate. Más mexicano que el mole is the most quoted in everyday speech.

Can I use food refranes at a Mexican dinner table?

Yes. Barriga llena, corazón contento at the end of a good meal is a small social compliment to the cook.

Do Mexican kids learn these proverbs?

Most pick up the everyday food refranes from grandparents. The longer or more specific ones tend to be heard but not quoted by young speakers.
