What is the most romantic Mexican refrán?

"Contigo, pan y cebolla" is the most quoted. It signals commitment in scarcity rather than fantasy of abundance.

Are Mexican love proverbs cynical?

Some are realistic rather than cynical. They describe how relationships behave; they are observations, not warnings against love.

Yes, often, and with mixed registers. Said warmly when splitting a bill, pointedly when there is strain, and printed on shop signs.

The friendship ones are safer. The romantic ones only land when the relationship has matched weight. Used early, they sound rehearsed.

Most are not. Quien bien te quiere te hará llorar historically appears more from older women, but younger Mexicans use it across genders.
