How many Mexican proverbs are there?

The Refranero del Centro Virtual Cervantes catalogs over 5,000 Spanish-language refranes. Of those, several hundred are documented as specifically Mexican in usage or origin, with regional variants tracked by the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua.

Are Mexican proverbs religious?

Some are, particularly older ones referencing God, the devil, or Catholic saints. The majority are secular and observational.

What's the difference between a refrán, a dicho, and a proverbio?

All three describe a fixed expression with traditional wisdom. Refrán is the most common term in Mexico for short, often rhymed sayings. Dicho is broader and includes one-liner commentaries that are not structurally a proverb. Proverbio is more formal and is preferred in academic writing.

Can I learn Mexican Spanish without learning refranes?

Functionally yes, but you will miss the texture. Mexican humor, advice and softening of bad news lean heavily on refranes; skipping them keeps your Spanish accurate but transactional.

Are refranes used by young Mexicans?

Yes, though selectively. Younger speakers reach for the food, animal and observational refranes and skip the longer biblical ones.
