150 Phrases Built Around Real Situations

The phrases are grouped into ten categories that follow the shape of a trip: greetings and basic expressions, common traveler questions, transport, food and drink, accommodation, emergencies, shopping and money, leisure and nightlife, local slang, and nature and adventure. Fifteen phrases per category, chosen because they are what a native reaches for without thinking, not what a textbook lists first.

Every entry follows the same structure: the phrase in hangul, its pronunciation in Revised Romanization, a plain English definition, a formality label (Informal, Neutral or Formal), an example sentence in Korean with the phrase in bold, and similar terms you can swap in. You see how the phrase sounds, what it means, when it is appropriate and how it sits inside a real sentence.

Each category closes with a short story written in Korean that drops the fifteen phrases into a natural situation on the road, followed by five multiple-choice exercises in Korean. Read the phrases first, then the story, then test yourself. By the end of a category you will have met each phrase at least three times in different contexts.

Do I need to read hangul to use this book?

It helps, but you can start without it. Every phrase comes with its pronunciation in Revised Romanization, so you can say it before you can read it. The short stories and exercises at the end of each category are in hangul, and the first tip in the book is to learn the alphabet early, even badly: it takes an afternoon and everything else gets easier.

Is this a grammar book?

No. The focus is on phrases you can use as they are, with a formality label so you know when each one fits. Grammar appears only where it changes what you should say, such as the polite ending that closes most sentences in the book.

Do I need to go through the categories in order?

No. Each category is self-contained, with its own phrases, story and exercises, so you can start with whichever situation you need first. Within a category, read the phrases before the story: the story uses them and the exercises assume you have seen them.
