150 Phrases Built Around Real Situations

The phrases are grouped into ten categories that follow the shape of a normal week: socializing and small talk, family and relationships, opinions and debate, emotions and reactions, health and the body, work and career, errands and services, home and daily routines, weather and seasons, and technology and the internet. Fifteen phrases in each, chosen because people say them, not because they fit a grammar point.

Every entry follows the same structure: the phrase in Arabic script, its pronunciation, a plain English definition, a formality label, an example sentence showing it in use, and similar expressions you can reach for instead.

Each category closes with a short story written in Egyptian Arabic that drops its fifteen phrases into a situation you would recognise, followed by five multiple-choice questions. The answers are at the back.

Who This Book Is For

  • Learners who can hold a basic conversation in Arabic and want the everyday Egyptian phrases that textbooks and apps tend to skip.

  • Anyone living in or moving to Egypt who needs the language of the office, the pharmacy and the family table.

  • Practical learners who prefer real sentences with a formality label over grammar tables.

About this book

Is this a paperback or a digital download?

This is a paperback, printed on demand and shipped to you physically. There is no PDF, ePub or Kindle version. Because it is printed to order, each copy is made specifically for you rather than taken off a shelf.

Is this Modern Standard Arabic or a dialect?

Egyptian Arabic, the dialect spoken in Cairo and understood across much of the Arab world thanks to Egyptian film and television. It is the Arabic people actually speak at home and at work, not the formal written register.

Do I need to read Arabic script to use this book?

It helps, but you can start without it. Every phrase comes with a pronunciation guide in Latin letters, so you can say it before you can read it. The short stories at the end of each category are in Arabic script, and by then you will have met all fifteen phrases already.

Do I need to go through the categories in order?

No. Each category is self-contained, with its own phrases, story and exercises, so you can start with whichever situation you need first. Within a category, read the phrases before the story: the story reuses all fifteen.
