The twenty stories follow Emily, an American exchange student who arrives in Seoul in February and leaves the following winter. Her roommate Jiwoo, Jiwoo's friend Minjun and a grandmother in Jeonju show her the things no textbook explains: who turns the meat at a Korean barbecue, why the whole country goes quiet on the morning of the suneung, and what people do when the first snow falls. Each story stands on its own, but read in order they add up to a year.

Every story is followed by a list of twenty words and expressions from the text, written in hangul with the Revised Romanization in parentheses and a short English definition. The entries marked Reg are the distinctly Korean ones, the words that carry culture and not only meaning. The list sits right after the story, so you can check a term and keep reading instead of stopping for a dictionary.

Five comprehension questions in English close each chapter. They ask what happened in the story, not whether you recognised isolated words, which is the difference that matters at beginner level. The answer key for all twenty chapters is at the back of the book, so you can check yourself without help.

Do I need to have read Volume 1?

No. Volume 2 is a new collection with its own characters and its own storyline, written at the same beginner level. If you read the first volume you will recognise the format. If this is your first book with us, you can start right here.

Do I need to read hangul?

Yes. The stories are written entirely in hangul, with no romanization in the text itself. The Revised Romanization appears only in the vocabulary lists, in parentheses after each term. If you are still learning to read hangul, these short stories are good practice: take them slowly and read each one twice.

Do I need to read the chapters in order?

It reads best in order, because the twenty stories follow one person through one year in Korea, from February to the first snow. You can dip into a single story on its own, but reading start to finish is how the book is meant to work.
